Albert Weiss, a well-known name in costume jewelry world up to the 1960s.
Albert Weiss began his jewelry design career with Coro in the 1930s, where he honed his craft before founding his own company, “Albert Weiss,” in New York in 1942. While primarily a designer and not a jeweler, Weiss collaborated with manufacturers such as Hollycraft, Coro, and possibly Rudolph Weiss to produce his designs. He also traveled to Europe to source rhinestones and Swarovski crystals, commissioning pieces from artisans in Kaufbeuren.
Early Albert Weiss pieces featured marks such as WEISS NY, Weissco, and AW Co. with a crown symbol (representing “W”). From 1951, the mark WEISS was introduced, followed by WEISS with a copyright symbol (a lowercase “c” in a circle) starting in 1955.
In 1969, Albert Weiss passed the business to his son, who struggled to maintain its success. The company ultimately closed in 1971.
